  just a few questions.

  if some of you base your moral standards on the bible, how do you know what is right and wrong?

  i ask because the morals in the bible change a lot.

  Void -- I agree with you, and know and am friends with the kind of atheists that you describe. The subject though, being morals, supposes that Judeo-Christian morals in particular should be cast off in favor of "the light of humanistic morality". (this can be clearly seen in the article posted by Nvr) This "light of humanistic morality" has been tried, and it went down as a total failure, the French Revolution.

  The successes, which produce social order that makes prosperity possible for the greatest number of people, have been the gov'ts founded on Judeo-Christian principles of morality.

  John Adams was responding to a popular book of his time that touted the "light of humanistic morality".

  What awaits...this has been seen before nvr. Read about the French Revolution.

  It's always a pleasure to see you.

  Sorry nvr, just wanted to hear what you think after reading the article you posted. Would we all be 'free' if biblical morality was cast aside, as full of "contradictions" as it is?

  This question has raged for a long time, I wanted to hear your thoughts.

  Even the one, uber-strict, head-slapping "pay attention Johnny" family was letting their kids zone out. Get this. They had their huge stack of magazines sitting on the floor that they had obtained prior to the meeting. Uber Dad goes "psst" to his kid who was sitting next to the pile of mags. He motions for the kid to hand him the latest Awake! so he doesn't have to listen to the monotone drivel anymore.

  Nvr, you ever read Marquis de Condorcet's Progress of the Human Mind? Is that thesis the point of this thread?

  He wrote, "the perfectibility of man is infinite," and that "priests (representing religion in general) had become dupes of religious "fables" that enslave man..."

  I need the date for the 2008 Memorial

  i want to make plans for the year's vacations.. i just would hate to make plans, spend money, then the wife says she .

  needs to cancel something because of the memorial.

  Anyone watched the film 'Sicko'?

  i watched this film last night, and it made me really really grateful that we have free health care in the uk.

  i know we complain about the state of the nhs, but the bottom line is if there is ever anything wrong with me my first thought will not be 'does my insurance cover this' or 'can i afford this'.. there was one part of the film where michael moore takes some people to cuba to get free health care and one woman picks up inhalers for 5 cents a piece, that are costing her $120 in the us.

  she just breaks down and crys at the disparity of the cost.. it was also telling to see the insurance companies employ people specifically to try and find ways to deny claims or to void policies where a claim has been made.

  A friend who works in Red China also saw first hand the equality and "free" health care recieved by the farm workers there

  Medicare fraud was mentioned, so why make Medicare bigger and easier to defraud? Medicare doesn't work... we need to make it bigger? Huh?

  Frankly, I'm willing to pay $2/aspirin that the hospitals build in to recover from payers the money they loose from people who can't pay.
